News Highlights

  • Hyundai Santro CNG variant will only be on sale
  • Five petrol only variants have been phased out
  • Diesel variants of Aura & Grand i10 Nios also discontinued

Hyundai India has discontinued the Santro hatchback in the country, claims a Rushlane report. Being the company's most affordable offering in the Indian market, Hyundai Santo was available in six variants namely Era Executive, Magna, Sportz, Sportz AMT, Sportz Executive CNG and Asta. The South-Korean automaker has phased out all the variants of the hatch except Sportz CNG which means that all the petrol variants will not be available for sale and only the CNG variant can be purchased. Hyundai has told the dealers to accept bookings for the discontinued variants only if they have them in stock.

The skyrocketing fuel prices could have propelled Hyundai to discontinue the petrol variants and focus more on the factory fitted CNG variant. Also, the production constraints in the present scenario could have been one of the factors for Hyundai to pull the plug on the petrol variants. So, it clearly means that from now onwards, the Santro will be a CNG only model in India. Hyundai Santro CNG is powered by a 1.1L MPI petrol engine which delivers power output of 59 bhp and peak torque of 85 Nm as compared to the petrol only version's 68 bhp and 99 Nm. It is linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Though the petrol only variants also had an option of a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Hyundai Santro contributes to a decent chunk of company sales every month in the Indian market. It bagged the 15th spot in the list of top selling hatchbacks in March 2022 in India as the company retailed 2,494 units which was a YoY growth of 15.20 percent. Though sales fell down to 1,793 units in April 2022. The brand also phased out the diesel variants of Grand i10 Nios and Aura in the domestic market. Henceforth, both the aforementioned cars will be available only in petrol fuel trim. The demand for diesel cars in the entry-level segment has witnessed a steep decline in recent times and it could possibly be one of the strong reasons for Hyundai to do away with the Grand i10 Nios diesel and Aura diesel.
